Summary of Work

Named after one of the fathers of modern trauma surgery, Dr. Michael W. Chapman, UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA recently opened its new Emergency and Trauma Center in 2010.

Started in 2004, this new $40 million, 470,000 square foot addition expands the existing hospital to a total of 645 beds and serves as a key referral center for an area encompassing 33 counties and 6 million residents.  Also located in this new pavilion is the Elizabeth C. Chapman Emergency Department recognizing Michael’s wife.  The new emergency room increases the number of beds to 68 making it one of Northern California’s largest emergency facilities.  Also incorporated in this new expansion are operating rooms, a neurosurgical intensive care unit, cardiology and radiology services and a 12 bed burn area.  The main entrance to the hospital was relocated and is now situated in this new pavilion.

This new building meets the state seismic safety standards and Title 24 Part 6 energy code standards.

This project is another example of BEST’s various divisions working in tandem to provide service to the General Contractor.  In this instance the Roofing Division and the Glazing Division from our Northern California branch in Hayward provided the installation skills and the experience.

Roofing Division

The roofing Division supplied and installed two very distinct roofing systems: 1) A single ply “rubber roofing” system and 2) Metal roofing.

Single ply Roofing

This system was installed over a flat concrete deck.  To provide drainage, a tapered insulation was installed over the concrete in low rise foam.  This ranged from a low of 1/2” to approximately 11” at the highest point.  Over the insulation a 60mil black EPDM membrane was installed.  This thermoset membrane was loose laid and secured by ballasting with river rock.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing was installed on the main roof of the hospital and on both entrance canopies.  On the main roof, the system was installed over an extruded polystyrene nail board with an Ice & Watershield underlayment.  The metal roof is 20 GA metal in Cambridge White.  Some of the roofing panels were up to 63 feet in length.  The canopies were constructed with the same metal materials.

Glazing Division

A significant portion of this contract was executed by the glazing division.  Several types of glazing systems were installed:

  • SuperLite II-XL 60 and 120 in GPX framing for the 1 and 2-hour walls
  • SuperLite II-XL 60 and 90 in GPX Framing for the 60 and 90 minute full vision doors
  • Fire-rated decorative art glass with SuperLite II-XL 60 in GPX framing for the prayer and reflection area
  • The interior glazing features numerous applications of fire-rated glass, including large expanses of fire-rated products in the atrium and light wells, decorative fire-rated products in the prayer/reflection area, and other fire-rated products in exit corridors and the waiting room
  • The central design element is a large skylight that floods the atrium and various light wells with natural light features
  • Two-hour fire-rated products used for the atrium and light well walls allow natural light to reach even further into the building

Cost Saving to the GC

This project also points to the savings realized by the GC and ultimately the client, where a multi-trade contract is awarded to one subcontractor in this case BEST Contracting Services, Inc.

Savings from areas such as economies of scale, for example, equipment sharing by various divisions and the ability to sequence installations streamlining the crew staffing are passed through to the GC making for a more efficient project.

Project Detail

UC Davis Canopies

Metal Canopies
Canopies consist of Centria standing seam panels, color Cambridge White.

Flat Roof Area

Flat Roof Areas
The flat roof  areas consist of flat concrete decks.  To create drainage we installed tapered insulation ranging from 1/2 “ thick to 11”.

The roofing membrane, a 60 mil thick EPDM system is loose laid over the insulation and ballasted in position using river rock.

Metal Roof

Sloped Metal Roofs
These standing seam Cambridge White roof panels were installed over a nail board using extruded polystyrene.  The underlayment is Ice and Watershield.  At the longest runs these 20GA metal roof panels exceed 60feet in length.

UC Davis Interior Glazing

Interior Glazing
Fire rated glass throughout including atrium, walls and doors.  Decorative fire rated glazing in Prayer/Reflection area.
